Signant Health alternatives for studies built around the participant

Signant Health is one of the deepest eCOA and clinician ratings vendors in pharma, with RTSM, EDC, eConsent and now Ametris wearables under one roof. If your study needs that full sponsor stack, it's a serious choice. If what you actually need is a branded participant app with eConsent, validated eCOA, consumer wearable data and engagement that keeps people in the study, WeGuide gives you that on one managed platform, priced for the study you're running.

No pressure, no hard sell. A 30 minute walkthrough with a research colleague who's built platforms like yours.

Why research teams look for a Signant Health alternative

The short version

Signant Health is built for sponsors who want one partner across the evidence side of a trial: eCOA, clinician rated outcomes, randomisation and supply, EDC and eConsent. The company was formed when Genstar Capital combined CRF Health and Bracket in 2018, launched under the Signant name in 2019, and has added telemedicine (VirTrial), EDC (DSG) and wearable outcomes (Ametris, formerly ActiGraph) since then. For a global pivotal study in psychiatry or neurology, that breadth is exactly the point.

Why teams look elsewhere

The pressure usually comes from teams whose study is a different shape. Signant's own materials describe a company serving more than 600 sponsors and CROs, including all of the Top 20 pharma companies. Its products, services and scientific support are designed around pharma programmes with complex endpoints, rater training, drug supply logistics and multinational delivery. Academic research groups, registries, longitudinal cohorts and digital health programmes often arrive at Signant through the eCOA door and find they are evaluating a full enterprise eClinical suite when what they need is a participant platform.

The second thing teams notice is where the participant sits. Signant's Patient Engagement App is a companion to its SmartSignals eCOA, with reminders, scheduling, study information and video calls, and it runs on participants' own phones or provisioned devices. It is a capable piece of the Signant stack. It is not designed to be a long term, branded home for a research programme that runs for years, follows a cohort from birth, or keeps a rare disease registry alive between trials.

The third is the wearable question. With Ametris, Signant now owns research grade activity sensors such as the ActiGraph LEAP and an analytics layer built for regulatory endpoints. That is a genuine strength for sponsors building digital endpoints. Studies that want passive data from the Garmin, Apple Health, Health Connect or Fitbit Air devices participants already own are asking a different question.

WeGuide starts from the participant. We built whitelabel iOS and Android apps under your brand, with eScreening and eConsent, eCOA from a library of validated instruments, native consumer wearable integrations and an engagement layer designed to keep people in the study. If your protocol needs centralised clinician ratings, rater training or randomisation and drug supply, Signant is probably the better fit, and we'll say so on the call. If the participant experience is where your study is won or lost, read on.

A quick way to tell which side you're on: look at what drives your primary endpoint. If it is a clinician rated scale scored by trained raters, a blinded drug supply that has to be randomised and tracked across depots, or a research grade sensor whose output is the endpoint itself, Signant's model is designed for exactly that. If your evidence depends on participants consenting remotely, completing questionnaires on their own schedule, syncing a device they already wear and staying enrolled for a year or more, the participant platform becomes the centre of the study and everything else connects to it. Plenty of programmes sit in between, which is why the hybrid option further down this page exists.

Key differences between WeGuide and Signant Health

For teams evaluating Signant for eCOA and participant engagement rather than clinician ratings or drug supply, here's what changes with WeGuide.

Your brand on the participant's phone

Signant's Patient Engagement App is built as a companion to its SmartSignals eCOA inside the Signant suite. WeGuide ships native iOS and Android apps fully branded under your organisation's name and identity. Consent, questionnaires, education content, messages and device sync all live in one app that becomes the home of the study for the participant.

Consumer wearables, natively

Signant's wearable strategy now runs through Ametris: research grade sensors and validated third party devices for regulatory endpoints. WeGuide integrates natively with Garmin, Apple Health, Health Connect and Fitbit Air, so participants connect the devices they already own once and data syncs into the study automatically. On supported Garmin models, WeGuide also collects raw accelerometer and gyroscope data at 25 Hz through the Garmin Health SDK. Different questions, different tools.

Trials, registries and cohorts on one platform

Signant is built around the sponsor trial lifecycle. WeGuide runs trials, longitudinal patient registries and population cohorts on the same platform, from GenV in Victoria to the FSHD Global registry. If your research programme lasts longer than a single protocol, that continuity matters.

Where Signant Health genuinely excels

Clinician rated outcomes in psychiatry and neurology. Rater Station, rater training and qualification, and central rating services are built for the complex clinician reported scales that CNS trials depend on, with on screen guidance and audio or video capture for independent review. WeGuide does not offer rater training or central ratings. If your primary endpoint is a clinician rated scale, Signant is a specialised choice.

Randomisation and trial supply at scale. Signant's RTSM draws on more than 2,000 protocols in 90 countries, with direct to patient supply, supply pooling across studies and emergency unblinding. WeGuide is not an RTSM vendor. For blinded drug trials with complex supply chains, Signant or another dedicated RTSM belongs in your stack.

One partner across the evidence stack. eCOA, eClinRO, RTSM, EDC, eConsent, telemedicine, supply chain software and analytics from one vendor is a real procurement advantage for sponsors who want to minimise hand offs. Signant also packages this for smaller companies through its Signant Biotech offering.

Wearable outcomes science through Ametris. The May 2026 acquisition of Ametris (formerly ActiGraph) brings research grade activity sensors and wearable derived digital outcome measures into Signant. Sponsors building regulatory digital endpoints from accelerometry now have that science and the eCOA in one company.

Pharma scale track record. Signant reports more than 600 sponsor and CRO customers, including all Top 20 pharma, and says it supported a quarter of novel FDA and EMA drug approvals between 2020 and 2025. That regulatory history is an asset newer platforms have to earn.

If your study needs clinician ratings, drug supply management or a single enterprise vendor across the evidence stack, Signant is a strong fit. We'd rather say that honestly than pitch WeGuide into a study where it doesn't belong.

When WeGuide runs alongside Signant Health, and when it doesn't

‍

Some sponsors keep Signant for what it is specialised in, such as RTSM, clinician ratings or EDC, and use WeGuide for a participant facing programme that sits around or after the trial: a registry, a long term follow up cohort, or a branded engagement app. Our Integration Engine connects through REST API, webhooks and HL7 / FHIR, so participant data can flow where your team needs it. There is no prebuilt Signant connector today, so we scope the data flow with you in the discovery call.

Running two eCOA systems inside the same protocol is rarely a good idea. If Signant already runs your eCOA for a study, we'll usually advise keeping it there and using WeGuide where it adds something Signant doesn't.

How the switch works

For teams evaluating Signant for participant facing work and considering WeGuide instead, or running WeGuide alongside it, here's how onboarding typically plays out.

Discovery Call

A 30 minute conversation with one of our research delivery team. We look at your protocol, your eCOA and consent requirements, and which platform actually fits. If your study needs clinician ratings or drug supply management, we'll tell you Signant is the better choice.

Study Configuration

Our team works alongside yours to configure the study in WeGuide: eScreening and consent flows, eCOA schedules, wearable connections and engagement content. If WeGuide needs to exchange data with Signant or another system, we scope and configure the integration at this stage. Typical timeline: two to four weeks.

We Guide

Participant Onboarding

The whitelabel app goes live. Your coordinators invite participants, who download the app under your organisation's brand. Consent flows, reminders and support content are ready from day one.

Ongoing Support

You get a named research delivery contact, not a ticketing queue. We stay involved for the life of the study.

Case studies: research teams that needed a participant platform

BRACE Trial (Murdoch Children's Research Institute)

An international randomised trial testing whether the BCG vaccine could protect healthcare workers during COVID-19, run across several countries with thousands of participants. It was a hybrid design: vaccination and blood collection happened in person, and WeGuide supported the participant facing side of the study between those site contacts.

GenV (Generation Victoria)

A whole of state longitudinal birth cohort in Victoria, Australia, covering roughly 124,000 people: about 50,000 children and 74,000 parents. Engagement over many years needs a branded app families keep on their phones, push notifications and multi modal data capture. That's cohort territory, well outside the sponsor trial lifecycle.

FSHD Global

A longitudinal patient registry for facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, combining patient reported outcomes with wearable integration. Participants report from home on their own phones, devices sync in the background, and the research team keeps a continuous picture of a rare disease over time instead of a snapshot at each clinic visit.

Questions

Straight answers on how WeGuide compares to Signant Health, what running both looks like, and when Signant is the right call.

Contact us

Is Signant Health the same company as ActiGraph?

Not quite. ActiGraph rebranded as Ametris, and Signant Health announced its acquisition of Ametris on 14 May 2026. ActiGraph devices such as the LEAP sensor are now part of Signant's digital health technologies offering, and Signant describes the deal as uniting its eCOA with wearable derived digital outcome measures.

Who owns Signant Health?

Signant Health is backed by the private equity firm Genstar Capital. Genstar acquired CRF Health and combined it with Bracket in 2018, the business launched under the Signant name in June 2019, and trade press still described Signant as Genstar backed when it bought Ametris in 2026. Check Signant's own disclosures for the full investor list if it matters to your procurement.

Can WeGuide replace Signant's RTSM or clinician ratings?

No. WeGuide is not an RTSM or drug supply product, and it doesn't offer rater training or central rating services. If your study needs either, keep Signant or another specialist for that part and use WeGuide where the participant experience is the priority.

Can WeGuide replace Signant for eCOA and eConsent?

For many studies, yes. WeGuide offers eCOA with a library of validated instruments and eScreening and eConsent with version control, re-consent workflows and an audit trail, all inside a whitelabel participant app, on participants' own phones or devices the sponsor provides. Where your eCOA depends on complex clinician administered scales with rater training and central ratings, Signant is the stronger fit.

How does pricing compare?

Neither vendor publishes a price list, and Signant's website doesn't list pricing. WeGuide is project based and quoted per study, with hosting, support and modules included. We'll give you a clear quote after the discovery call.

How long does it take to launch a study on WeGuide?

After a discovery call, our team configures the study alongside yours, typically in two to four weeks. Then the whitelabel app goes live and you get a named delivery contact for the life of the study. Any integration with Signant or another system is scoped on that first call so it's built in the same window.
