ExpiWell alternatives for studies that need more than momentary surveys
ExpiWell is a strong EMA tool, and for a lab running experience sampling on a tight budget it's hard to argue with. When an investigator led study grows into validated ePRO, regulatory eConsent, native Garmin, Apple Health, Health Connect and Fitbit Air data and an app that carries your organisation's name, WeGuide is built for that next step, on a managed platform your team doesn't have to run.
No pressure, no hard sell. A 30 minute walkthrough with a research colleague who's built platforms like yours.

Why research teams look for an ExpiWell alternative
%2520(1).png)
The short version
ExpiWell does one thing very well: it lets researchers run ecological momentary assessment and experience sampling studies without writing code. Built out of Purdue University, it has a free plan, academic pricing and a long publication record in psychology and behavioural science.
Why teams look elsewhere
The pressure usually starts when an EMA study turns into something closer to a clinical study. The protocol now asks for validated patient reported outcome instruments rather than custom items, an eConsent process with version control and a re-consent path that an ethics committee will sign off, wearable data from devices participants already own, and an app that carries the name of the hospital or institute running the research. ExpiWell can cover parts of that. Its Sensor+ plan adds Fitbit and Apple Watch data, and eConsent is included from the Plus plan up. But it is designed first and foremost as an experience sampling platform, and participants join studies through the shared ExpiWell app.
Timelines change the picture too. An experience sampling burst typically runs for days or weeks. A birth cohort, a disease registry or a follow up trial can run for years, and over that time the questions shift from "did participants answer today's prompts?" to "are they still with us next year, have they re-consented to the amended protocol, and is their device data still flowing?" Those are engagement, consent and integration problems as much as survey problems, and they are the ones WeGuide was designed around.
We built WeGuide for teams whose studies have moved past momentary surveys into longitudinal cohorts, registries and investigator led trials. If ExpiWell still fits your protocol, that's completely fine, and we'll tell you honestly if staying put is the better choice. If you need ePRO, eConsent, wearables and engagement in one participant experience under your own brand, read on.

Where ExpiWell excels
It's genuinely accessible for academic budgets. The Free Basic plan includes unlimited participants, responses and projects, paid plans start with a seven day trial, and there are graduate student, short term and department bundle options. For a doctoral project or a pilot, that is a real advantage.
Its EMA scheduling is deep. Event contingent, calendar and rolling schedules, personalised schedules per participant, adaptive time zones, offline capture and event triggers for JITAIs are exactly what experience sampling protocols need, with no code.
Location is a first class variable. GPS capture, continuous tracking and geofenced surveys that fire on arrival, stay and departure make it a natural fit for geographically explicit EMA, which is a niche few platforms cover this well. WeGuide does not offer GPS capture or geofencing, so if location drives your protocol, ExpiWell is the stronger choice.
It has a strong research pedigree. ExpiWell came out of Purdue University, has a scientific advisory board of working academics, and points to a long list of peer reviewed publications. Its IRB information page gives ethics applications the detail they ask for.
It is honest about what it is. ExpiWell publishes its plan matrix feature by feature, flags what is coming soon rather than overselling it, and states plainly that SOC 2 is still in progress. That transparency makes ethics and procurement conversations easier.
Its participant app is well liked. The app is free, works offline, supports photo, voice and video answers with automatic transcription on higher plans, and has a 4.6 rating from more than a thousand reviews on the US App Store.
If your study fits comfortably inside those strengths, honestly, staying on ExpiWell is the right call. We'd rather tell you that than sell you something you don't need.
Can WeGuide work alongside ExpiWell?
Usually it's one or the other. Both platforms ask participants to install an app and both send notifications, so running them side by side means two apps on the same phone, which tends to hurt adherence rather than help it. Where we do see a split, it's by study phase: a lab keeps ExpiWell for short EMA pilots and methods work, and moves the larger longitudinal study or trial to WeGuide. If your institution also runs REDCap, WeGuide's Integration Engine can sync with it both ways, so your data lands in the database your team already knows.
The other pattern we see is methodological. Some research groups keep ExpiWell as their teaching and methods platform, using its free plan with students learning experience sampling, and use WeGuide for funded studies where a branded app, validated outcome measures and regulatory eConsent are part of the grant or the ethics approval. That split works well because the two never compete for the same participant's attention.
How the switch works
For teams ready to move a study beyond ExpiWell, here's how a typical onboarding plays out.
Discovery Call
A 30 minute conversation with our research delivery team. We look at your protocol, how your EMA schedule is set up today, and which parts need validated instruments, eConsent or wearables. If ExpiWell is still the better fit for the study in front of you, we'll say so. No pressure, no sales pitch.
Study Configuration
Our team works alongside yours to configure the study in WeGuide: schedules and notifications, eCOA and ePRO, consent flows, wearable connections and, if you use REDCap, the Integration Engine. Typical timeline: two to four weeks.
Participant Onboarding
The whitelabel app goes live under your organisation's brand. Your coordinators invite participants, consent flows and notification templates are ready, and data starts arriving from day one. If the study runs in more than one language, translations for consent, instruments and participant content are managed in the same place.
Ongoing Support
You get a named research delivery contact, not a ticketing queue. We stay involved for the life of the study, including protocol amendments and re-consent.

Case studies: research teams that needed more than momentary surveys
BRACE Trial (Murdoch Children's Research Institute)
Murdoch Children's Research Institute ran the BRACE trial, an international randomised trial testing whether the BCG vaccine could protect healthcare workers during COVID-19. It enrolled thousands of participants across several countries. Vaccination and blood collection happened in person, while WeGuide carried the participant side of the study, the kind of hybrid design an EMA tool on its own isn't built to run.
GenV (Generation Victoria)
Generation Victoria is a whole of state birth cohort in Victoria, Australia, following roughly 124,000 people: about 50,000 children and 74,000 parents. A study on that scale and timeline needs a branded app families keep on their phones for years, consent that can evolve with the study, and engagement that goes well beyond a sampling burst. WeGuide is the platform GenV uses to do that, for a cohort that will follow its children well beyond the life of a typical grant.
FSHD Global
FSHD Global runs a longitudinal patient registry for facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy on WeGuide, combining patient reported outcomes with wearable integration. It's the kind of long running, multi data source study where momentary surveys are only one piece of the picture. A registry like this has to keep patients engaged between clinic visits, capture outcomes they report themselves alongside data from their devices, and do it under the name of a patient organisation they already trust.
Questions
Straight answers on how WeGuide compares to ExpiWell, what moving looks like, and when staying on ExpiWell is the right call.
Contact usIs WeGuide an EMA platform like ExpiWell?
WeGuide supports the core of an EMA protocol: scheduled surveys, push notifications, reminders and in app messaging, configured without code. But it isn't an EMA specialist in the way ExpiWell is. ExpiWell has deeper experience sampling features such as adaptive time zones and cognitive modules, plus GPS capture and geofenced surveys, which WeGuide does not offer. WeGuide is broader: validated ePRO, regulatory eConsent, native wearables, telehealth and engagement in a whitelabel app. If your study is pure experience sampling, ExpiWell may be the better fit.
Does ExpiWell support wearables?
Yes, on its Sensor+ plan. ExpiWell connects to Fitbit for daily and intraday data and to Apple Watch through HealthKit, and offers BACtrack Skyn for transdermal alcohol monitoring on a separate licence. Garmin and Oura are listed as coming soon. Its integrations page also notes that Google is retiring the Fitbit developer API and that ExpiWell is building a replacement. Google's own timeline ended support on 30 September 2026 and switches the legacy API off on 30 October 2026. WeGuide has native Garmin, Apple Health, Health Connect and Fitbit Air integrations today, which covers both iPhone and Android participants without waiting on a roadmap item or a plan upgrade.
How does ExpiWell pricing compare with WeGuide?
ExpiWell has a free forever Basic plan with unlimited participants, and its paid research plans (Plus, Premium, Sensor+ and GEMA) are quote based with a seven day trial, plus graduate student, short term and department options. WeGuide is project based and quoted on request, and the quote includes hosting, support and modules. For a small EMA pilot, ExpiWell will usually cost less. For a study that needs eConsent, validated instruments, wearables and a branded app, compare what's included rather than the headline price.
Can I give participants a branded app with ExpiWell?
Participants on ExpiWell download the ExpiWell app from the App Store or Google Play and join with a study code or invite. We did not find a custom branded app option on ExpiWell's website. WeGuide's participant apps are whitelabel by design, published under your organisation's brand on iOS and Android.
Is ExpiWell suitable for clinical trials?
ExpiWell positions itself for clinical researchers and pharma as well as academic labs, with HIPAA compliance, signed BAAs, GDPR with EU data residency and audit trails. Its public pages do not mention FDA 21 CFR Part 11, and SOC 2 is listed as in progress. WeGuide is FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliant, ISO 27001:2022 certified and TGA registered Class I medical device software. If your trial needs those, ask any vendor for the documentation directly.
Can we move an ongoing study from ExpiWell to WeGuide?
For a study already in the field, we usually recommend finishing the current wave on ExpiWell and starting the next wave or the follow on study on WeGuide, so participants don't switch apps mid protocol and your sampling schedule stays intact for analysis. ExpiWell exports data as CSV, TSV or XML, and we'll work with you during discovery on how historical data and new data line up.
