MyDataHelps alternatives for research teams that want their own branded app
MyDataHelps is a strong platform for US research that needs EHR and device data at scale. If your participants should open an app carrying your organisation's name, and you want a delivery team configuring the study alongside you, WeGuide is built for that. It connects to REDCap and your existing systems, so you don't have to rebuild what already works.

Why research teams look for a MyDataHelps alternative
%2520(1).png)
The short version
MyDataHelps, built by CareEvolution, does something genuinely useful: it lets research teams design a remote study themselves, then collect surveys, consent, wearable data and participant shared health records through one participant app. For US academic and federally funded research, it is one of the most capable tools available.
Why teams look elsewhere
The questions usually start when a study needs to feel like it belongs to the organisation running it. By default, participants join through the shared MyDataHelps app, and CareEvolution's own documentation notes that participants can enrol in multiple projects using that single app. Large programmes such as All of Us run a whitelabel version, but for most teams the participant sees the MyDataHelps name on their phone, not the hospital, institute or sponsor they actually trust.
The second question is about delivery. MyDataHelps Designer is a self service, code optional environment, with SDKs and APIs for teams that want to build custom views. That suits teams with in house digital capacity. Teams without it often want a partner who configures the study with them, owns the launch, and stays on as a named contact. A third group needs televisits, gamified engagement or a compliance story mapped to Australian and European requirements as well as US ones.
None of this makes MyDataHelps a weak product. It reflects who it was built for: research teams, often in the US and often federally funded, who want to design studies themselves and link participant devices to health records. WeGuide is built for the teams that want something different from the same category. If MyDataHelps already fits your study, that's a good outcome, and we'll say so. If it doesn't, the shortlist below covers the platforms research teams most often compare.

Where MyDataHelps excels
You can start for free. CareEvolution offers a free MyDataHelps Designer account, so a team can build and test a study before any procurement conversation. For early career researchers and pilot studies, that's a real advantage.
The broadest consumer device and health record reach we've seen. MyDataHelps connects to Apple Health, Health Connect, Google Health, Fitbit, Garmin, Oura and Omron, offers Apple Watch movement disorder data for Parkinson's and related projects, and lets participants share health records from more than 4,000 providers, plus Medicare claims through CMS Blue Button 2.0. If your protocol depends on linking wearables to EHR data, that combination is hard to match.
A US federal security posture. CareEvolution's platforms comply with NIST 800-53 Rev. 5 at the FISMA Moderate and Privacy baselines, hold an Authorization to Operate from the NIH, and are HIPAA and Part 11 compliant. For federally funded US research, that removes a lot of procurement friction.
Proven at national scale. The All of Us Research Program uses a whitelabel version of the MyDataHelps app for direct volunteer participants. Scripps Research's PROGRESS study, published in Nature Medicine, ran remote screening, consent, CGM and activity tracker data and EHR linkage on it. The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation chose CareEvolution for a direct to patient IBD registry in 2026.
Built for data scientists. Exports land in your cloud or SFTP server in CSV, JSON or Parquet, the survey builder integrates with REDCap, and SDKs and APIs are documented for custom work.
If your study is US based, federally funded, and depends on EHR plus device data with a team that's comfortable building its own study, MyDataHelps is a defensible choice. We'd rather say that than oversell what WeGuide does.
Can WeGuide and MyDataHelps work together?
Within a single study, we'd usually recommend one participant app. Asking participants to install two research apps adds friction and splits your data. Across a portfolio, the two can coexist: some institutions keep MyDataHelps for US studies built around EHR and claims linkage, and use WeGuide where a whitelabel app, televisits or an Australian and European compliance posture matter more. Both platforms integrate with REDCap, so REDCap can stay the shared data record, and WeGuide's Integration Engine connects through REST API, webhooks and HL7 / FHIR.
How the switch works
For teams that are ready to move a study, or a new wave of a cohort, from MyDataHelps to WeGuide, here's how onboarding typically plays out.
Discovery Call
A 30 minute conversation with one of our research delivery team. We look at your protocol, your current MyDataHelps setup, and what's actually blocking you. If MyDataHelps is the better fit, we'll tell you.
Study Configuration
Our team works alongside yours to configure the study in WeGuide: consent flows, instruments, schedules, wearable connections and branding. If REDCap is your data record, we configure the Integration Engine at this stage. Typical timeline: two to four weeks.
Participant Onboarding
Your app goes live in the App Store and Google Play under your organisation's own account and name, or in the existing WeGuide app. Research coordinators invite participants, and eConsent, eCOA instruments and engagement content are ready from day one. Wearable connections for Garmin, Apple Health, Health Connect and Fitbit Air are set up in the onboarding flow, so data starts syncing once a participant connects their device.
Ongoing Support
You get a named research delivery contact, not a ticketing queue. We stay involved for the life of the study, including amendments, re-consent and new study waves.

Case studies: research teams that put their own brand in participants' hands
BRACE Trial (Murdoch Children's Research Institute)
An international randomised trial testing the BCG vaccine in healthcare workers during COVID-19, run across several countries with thousands of participants. BRACE was a hybrid trial, with vaccination and blood collection in person, and WeGuide supporting the participant facing side of the study.
GenV (Generation Victoria)
Generation Victoria is a whole of state longitudinal birth cohort in Victoria, Australia, following roughly 124,000 people: about 50,000 children and 74,000 parents. A cohort of that length depends on families keeping a branded study app on their phones for years, and that's the role WeGuide plays.
FSHD Global
A longitudinal patient registry for facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy, combining patient reported outcomes with wearable integration in a branded participant experience. The kind of registry where participants and the patient community need to recognise the organisation behind it.
Questions
Straight answers on how WeGuide compares to MyDataHelps, what moving a study looks like, and when MyDataHelps is the right call.
Contact usIs MyDataHelps free? Why would we pay for WeGuide?
CareEvolution offers a free MyDataHelps Designer account to build and explore a study, which is a genuine advantage for pilots. Pricing for running studies at scale isn't published, so compare like for like quotes. WeGuide is project based and quoted on request, with hosting, support and modules included, plus a delivery team that configures the study with you. When you compare, include the staff time your team would spend building and maintaining the study in a self service tool, because that's usually where the real difference sits.
Can participants see our brand instead of MyDataHelps?
In WeGuide, yes: each study can ship as whitelabel native iOS and Android apps under your organisation's own App Store account and name, or use the existing WeGuide app if you prefer. MyDataHelps runs most studies in its shared app, and the All of Us Research Program uses a whitelabel version of it. If branding matters, ask CareEvolution what a whitelabel build involves for your study.
Does WeGuide match MyDataHelps on wearables and health records?
Not on breadth, and we won't pretend otherwise. MyDataHelps connects to a wider range, including Oura, Omron, Google Health, Apple Watch movement disorder data and environmental data. WeGuide's native integrations are Garmin, Apple Health, Health Connect and Fitbit Air, which cover many study designs, and on supported Garmin models WeGuide collects raw accelerometer and gyroscope data at 25 Hz through the Garmin Health SDK. Sponsors can also provide devices to participants who don't own one. On health records, WeGuide connects to clinical systems through HL7 / FHIR, while MyDataHelps lets participants share their own records from more than 4,000 providers. If your protocol depends on a specific device, raise it on the discovery call, and we'll tell you plainly whether WeGuide is the right fit for that study.
How do we move a study from MyDataHelps to WeGuide?
Most teams don't move participants mid wave. They finish the current wave, export data from MyDataHelps (CSV, JSON or Parquet), and launch the next wave or new study in WeGuide. Historical data can come in through the REST API or REDCap sync, and we scope that on the first call.
Is WeGuide compliant for US research as well as Australian and European studies?
Yes. WeGuide is HIPAA compliant with a BAA available and FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliant, alongside ISO 27001:2022 certification, GDPR compliance and TGA registration as Class I medical device software. MyDataHelps' published credentials lean towards US federal frameworks, including NIST 800-53 at FISMA Moderate and an NIH Authorization to Operate. If your funder requires those specifically, check them against both vendors.
When should we stay on MyDataHelps?
If your study is US based, federally funded, built around EHR and device linkage, and your team is comfortable building in a self service designer, MyDataHelps is a strong fit. WeGuide fits teams that want a branded app, built in televisits and engagement, an Australian and European compliance posture, and a delivery team alongside them.
