Datacubed Health alternatives for research that runs beyond the trial

Datacubed builds engagement led eCOA for clinical trials, and it does that well. If you need the same focus on participants in a whitelabel app under your own brand, with native wearables, telehealth and a platform that also carries registries and long term cohorts, WeGuide is built for that. If Datacubed is the better fit for your protocol, we'll tell you.

No pressure, no hard sell. A 30 minute walkthrough with a research colleague who's built platforms like yours.

Why research teams look for a Datacubed Health alternative

The short version

Datacubed Health has a clear point of view: people give better data when the technology adapts to them. Its eCOA and ePRO platform applies behavioural science, optional gamification and supportive reminders to keep trial participants compliant, on their own phones or on provisioned devices, across oncology, respiratory, CNS and metabolic studies.

Why teams look elsewhere

That philosophy is close to ours, so teams rarely leave Datacubed because they disagree with it. They look further when the study shape changes. Since a new CEO took over in May 2024, Datacubed has described a sharper focus on eCOA and ePRO for trials. That is good news for sponsors running trials. It is less helpful for teams whose work includes a patient registry, a population cohort, a wellbeing programme or long term follow up that outlives any single protocol.

Branding is the second reason. Datacubed's public pages do not describe whitelabel apps under a sponsor's or institution's brand. For academic institutions, registries and health programmes where participants already trust the organisation running the research, that brand is a big part of why people stay.

The third reason is control and connection. Datacubed delivers studies through its own project managers and describes an API first approach without naming the systems it connects to. Teams that want to configure studies themselves, or keep REDCap as their data backbone with two way sync, need a platform built for that.

WeGuide is a participant platform with eCOA built in. We put eCOA and ePRO, eScreening and eConsent, native wearables, telehealth and engagement into one whitelabel app that your team configures with a no code Program Builder, and we use the same platform for trials, registries and cohorts.

A simple test helps. If your study is an industry trial and you want a vendor to run an engagement led eCOA build for you, Datacubed was designed for that job. If you need a participant relationship under your own name that may outlast the trial, with consent, questionnaires, wearable data, education and contact with the study team in one app, WeGuide was designed for that one. The rest of this page lays out honestly where each one fits.

Key differences between WeGuide and Datacubed Health

For teams that share Datacubed's belief in participant engagement but need a different scope or operating model, here's what changes with WeGuide.

Your brand on the participant app

WeGuide ships native iOS and Android apps fully branded under your organisation's name and identity. Participants join your study, your registry or your programme, not a vendor's platform. When the research relationship runs for years, the trust participants already place in your institution does a lot of the engagement work for you, and every reminder, consent update and questionnaire arrives under a name they recognise.

One platform for trials, registries and cohorts

Datacubed is positioned around clinical trials, which is exactly where its engagement engine was designed to work. WeGuide carries interventional trials, patient registries such as FSHD Global and longitudinal cohorts such as GenV on the same platform, with eScreening, eConsent, eCOA, wearables, telehealth and engagement available across all of them.

Native wearables and named integrations

Garmin, Apple Health, Health Connect and Fitbit Air are built into WeGuide, so participants connect the devices they already own, and supported Garmin models add raw accelerometer and gyroscope data at 25 Hz through the Garmin Health SDK. The Integration Engine provides two way REDCap sync via API, Salesforce, HL7 and FHIR, plus a REST API and webhooks, so the app connects to the systems your team already runs.

Where Datacubed Health genuinely excels

Behavioural science at the core. Datacubed's engagement engine uses progress cues, supportive reminders and optional gamification grounded in behavioural science, and the company reports 85%+ retention and 90%+ compliance across studies. Engagement is not an afterthought in its product, and its customers would say so.

Device flexibility. Participants can use their own devices, online or offline, or receive provisioned study devices. For protocols that need controlled hardware, or populations where smartphone ownership is uneven, that choice is a real advantage. WeGuide supports provisioned devices too, so on this point the two platforms are closer than they first appear.

Therapeutic area design. Cycle based scheduling for oncology, daily diaries with inhaler and spirometry sensors for respiratory, stepwise multicomponent assessments with a cognitive accessible interface for CNS, and smart scale integration for metabolic studies. These are thoughtful, protocol specific designs.

Global language and regional reach. Datacubed reports deployments in 60+ countries and 100+ languages with scientifically validated ePRO and eCOA translations. It also set up a legal entity in China and launched its app on official Chinese Android stores, hosted on AWS Beijing, in 2023. For sponsors with Chinese sites, that groundwork matters.

Industry recognition in eCOA. Everest Group named Datacubed Health a Major Contender in its 2025 Life Sciences eCOA Products PEAK Matrix, after a Major Contender placement in its decentralised trials assessment in 2023. Its app also won Best Mobile App for Patient Engagement in the 2024 MedTech Breakthrough Awards.

A hands on delivery team. Datacubed's project managers orchestrate configuration, train sponsors, CROs and sites, and monitor compliance in real time, backed by a multilingual helpdesk. Sponsors who want the vendor to run the study build get that, and sites get a single point of contact for training and troubleshooting across a trial that spans several countries.

If your study is an industry trial that needs geofencing, deployment in China or a vendor led build, Datacubed is a strong choice. We'd rather say that plainly than pitch WeGuide into a study where it doesn't belong.

When WeGuide and Datacubed can work together

‍

Two engagement focused participant apps in the same trial would compete for the same participant's attention, so we wouldn't recommend running both in one study. The combination makes sense across a programme instead. Datacubed can run eCOA inside an industry trial while WeGuide carries the registry that feeds recruitment, or the long term follow up and cohort work that continues after the trial closes. Data exchange between the two would be scoped project by project through the Integration Engine's REST API and webhooks.

The same logic applies inside a single organisation. A sponsor might keep Datacubed for industry trials that need geofencing or Chinese sites, while an affiliated academic group, patient organisation or digital health team uses WeGuide for registries, cohorts and investigator led studies. Both platforms take participant engagement seriously. They simply aim it at different kinds of research.

How the switch works

For teams comparing Datacubed with WeGuide, or planning their next study or registry on a different platform, here's how onboarding typically plays out.

Discovery Call

A 30 minute conversation with one of our research delivery team. We look at your protocol, your instruments, your participants and how long the relationship needs to last. If your study needs geofencing or deployment in mainland China, we'll tell you Datacubed may be the better fit.

Study Configuration

Our team works alongside yours to configure the study in WeGuide: instruments from our library of validated instruments, forms in the Medical Form Builder, eConsent, schedules, education content and engagement. If you're keeping REDCap or Salesforce, we connect the Integration Engine at this stage, and translations are set up in the same pass for multilingual studies. Typical timeline: two to four weeks.

We Guide

Participant Onboarding

The whitelabel app goes live. Participants download it under your organisation's brand and move through screening, consent, wearable connection and their first assessments in one place.

Ongoing Support

You get a named delivery contact, not a ticketing queue. We stay involved for the life of the study or registry, including amendments and re-consent.

Case studies: engagement that continues beyond a single protocol

BRACE Trial (Murdoch Children's Research Institute)

Murdoch Children's Research Institute ran the BRACE trial, an international randomised trial testing whether the BCG vaccine could protect healthcare workers during COVID-19. It spanned several countries and thousands of participants. BRACE was a hybrid trial, with vaccination and blood collection in person, and the WeGuide app carried the participant side of the study between visits.

GenV (Generation Victoria)

Generation Victoria (GenV) is a whole of state longitudinal birth cohort in Victoria, Australia, of roughly 124,000 people: about 50,000 children and 74,000 parents. A cohort followed over years needs a platform designed for long term participation rather than a single trial's assessment schedule, and an app that families recognise as part of a study they chose to join.

FSHD Global

FSHD Global runs a longitudinal patient registry for facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy on WeGuide, combining patient reported outcomes with wearable integration. Registries like this one are the kind of programme that sits outside a trial focused eCOA product.

What is Datacubed Health?

Datacubed Health, which brands itself as Datacubed, is an eCOA and ePRO company founded in 2016 and based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Its platform combines eCOA, eConsent, behavioural science engagement, connected sensors and reporting for clinical trials, with participants on their own phones or provisioned devices. Kyle Hogan became CEO in May 2024. Sterling Partners has invested in the company since 2020 and still lists it as a portfolio company.

Is Datacubed Health owned by WCG?

Not according to any public record we found. Sterling Partners, which has invested in Datacubed since 2020, still lists Datacubed Health as a portfolio company, Datacubed's own news page announces no sale, and WCG's 2025 sale of its eCOA business to Clario covered MedAvante-ProPhase, VeraSci and Analgesic Solutions, not Datacubed. If ownership matters to your procurement, confirm it directly with Datacubed.

What are the best alternatives to Datacubed Health?

For a whitelabel participant platform that covers trials, registries and cohorts with native wearables, WeGuide. For enterprise decentralised trials with AI agents, Medable. For eCOA plus cardiac, imaging or respiratory endpoints, Clario. For participant centred eCOA in real world research, uMotif. For eCOA with eSource and sensors, Clinical ink. For an eCOA specialist with a full services wrap, Kayentis.

How is WeGuide different from Datacubed Health?

Both put participant engagement first. Datacubed applies it to clinical trial eCOA, with geofencing, deployment in China and a vendor led build. WeGuide applies it across trials, registries and cohorts, in whitelabel apps under your brand, with native Garmin, Apple Health, Health Connect and Fitbit Air, provisioned device support, built in telehealth, two way REDCap sync and a no code Program Builder your team can use. Both support validated instruments: Datacubed across PRO, ClinRO, ObsRO and PerfO, and WeGuide through a library of validated instruments plus the Medical Form Builder with conditional logic.

How much does WeGuide cost compared with Datacubed?

WeGuide pricing is project based and quoted on request, and it includes hosting, support and modules. Datacubed does not publish pricing on its website. The fairest comparison is a quote from each vendor against the same protocol.

Can WeGuide replace Datacubed mid study?

Changing eCOA platforms during an active trial is a regulatory and data continuity decision, not only a software one. Most teams make the change at the next study, at the next phase of a programme or when a registry or follow up stage begins. Our discovery call is the place to work through what a move would involve for your protocol.
