Why research teams look for an Evidation alternative

The short version

Evidation does something very few companies can. It keeps an ongoing, consented connection with around 5 million people across 97% of U.S. ZIP codes, and turns what they share into real world data, trial recruitment, patient insights and prospective studies for life sciences teams.

Why teams look elsewhere

Evidation's core asset is its community, not your cohort. Most of what Evidation sells starts from the Evidation Community: predefined cohorts across more than 100 conditions, datasets built from what members share, and recruitment from a population that has already opted in. That is enormously valuable when you don't have participants yet. It is less valuable when you already do. A hospital's own patients, a disease registry's members, a birth cohort, or a trial population recruited through your sites need a platform to run the study on, not a panel to recruit from.

The participant relationship is shaped around the Evidation app. Individuals join Evidation through a consumer health app where they earn points for tracking steps and sleep, reading content and answering surveys, and redeem them for rewards (10,000 points equals $10). Research invitations arrive inside that experience, and members choose what to share. It's a well designed model for engagement at population scale. For a university, a patient organisation or a sponsor that wants participants to feel they joined their study, the relationship sits with a different brand. Evidation does license its Research and Engagement Platform with a branded program experience, so if this matters to you, ask exactly how far that branding goes.

The focus is observational evidence, not trial operations. Evidation describes its prospective studies as "sponsor driven observational research", and its strengths are real world evidence, patient insights and commercial planning. Interventional and hybrid trials usually need a different toolset: eConsent with version control and re-consent, validated eCOA instruments tied to the visit schedule, telehealth visits, and two way sync with the EDC your data managers already use.

The reach is American. Evidation's community is built across U.S. ZIP codes. Studies in Australia, Europe or Asia, or studies that need participant content in several languages, depend on platform capabilities rather than access to a U.S. panel.

In practice, the signals tend to be the same. An ethics committee asks for the participant app to carry the institution's name rather than a vendor's. A protocol amendment means everyone has to re-consent, and the audit trail needs to show who signed which version and when. The study has to run in Australia or Europe as well as the U.S., in more than one language. Or the team already has thousands of people on a registry or a clinic list and doesn't need to pay for access to someone else's population. None of those are data problems, which is why a bigger dataset rarely solves them.

WeGuide takes the other side of that trade. We don't come with a ready made community of millions. We give you the platform to run your own study with your own participants: whitelabel apps under your organisation's brand, trial grade eConsent and eCOA, native wearables, and an Integration Engine that connects to REDCap and the rest of your stack. The two models serve different studies, and on this page we'll tell you honestly which is which.

Key differences between WeGuide and Evidation

For teams that already have participants, or need to run a trial rather than buy a dataset, here's what changes with WeGuide.

Your participants, your brand, your study

Evidation's research runs through a community that joined the Evidation app to earn rewards. WeGuide ships native iOS and Android apps fully branded under your organisation's name and identity, so the people you recruit join your study, not someone else's community. The app becomes the study's home, and the participant relationship stays with the research team, including after the study ends and the next one begins.

Built for trials and registries, not only observational data

WeGuide combines eScreening, eConsent with version control and re-consent workflows, a library of validated eCOA instruments, telehealth visits and a no code Program Builder in one system. That covers hybrid and decentralised trials, longitudinal registries and cohort studies, where Evidation's offering centres on real world evidence and observational research. It's FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliant, so the same platform can carry regulated data.

Research beyond the U.S. panel

Evidation's reach is defined by its U.S. community. WeGuide's multi language translation management, proven on the INHERIT study, plus GDPR compliance, ISO 27001:2022 certification and TGA registration as Class I medical device software, support research teams in Australia, Europe and beyond, wherever your participants are.

Where Evidation genuinely excels

A consented community at national scale. Around 5 million people across 97% of U.S. ZIP codes, more than a million of whom have taken part in research. No platform vendor, WeGuide included, can hand you that on day one. If you don't yet have participants, this is the headline reason to talk to Evidation.

Recruitment speed. Evidation reports recruiting 14,000 people with asthma in a week, and enrolling 100K people into a COVID-19 programme in five weeks. Its partnership with Trialbee extends that reach into trial referral. When enrolment timelines are the bottleneck, an already engaged panel moves faster than cold recruitment.

Real world datasets you can use now. Multimodal cohorts across conditions such as autoimmune, cardiometabolic and dermatology combine patient reported outcomes, wearable signals, clinical records and, in its newest autoimmune cohort, temporal proteomics from biosamples. For discovery and evidence teams that need data before they can design a study, that's a genuine shortcut.

A long research track record. Founded in 2012, Evidation reports 140+ real world studies supported and 100+ peer reviewed publications. It has worked with Johnson & Johnson on the Heartline study, the American College of Cardiology on a heart health programme, and BARDA on influenza like illness detection.

Study design for publication. Evidation positions its prospective studies around publication ready design, with endpoints aligned to regulatory, payer or scientific goals and structured, analysis ready datasets delivered at the end. For medical affairs and health economics teams that need evidence rather than software, that end to end service is a real advantage.

Engagement design at consumer scale. Points, personalised insights and well crafted content keep millions of people opening the app. That is hard to build, and it's why Evidation can stay in touch with a population over years.

If your programme needs a ready made U.S. population, fast recruitment, or an existing real world dataset, Evidation is worth the look and we'll say so without hedging.

When WeGuide and Evidation fit the same programme

‍

They solve different problems, so some programmes could reasonably use both. Evidation can help a sponsor understand a population, size a cohort or recruit in the U.S. WeGuide is the platform you run the study on once you have participants, under your own brand, with eConsent, eCOA, wearables and engagement in one place. We don't have a prebuilt integration with Evidation, so any data exchange would run through our REST API and webhooks, and we'll scope that honestly on the first call. If your study is purely observational, U.S. based and needs a panel more than a platform, Evidation alone is probably the simpler answer.

The opposite is also true. If you already have participants, need trial grade eConsent and eCOA, want the app under your own brand, or run studies outside the U.S., WeGuide on its own covers the study, and Evidation's community adds little you'd actually use.

How the switch works

For teams evaluating Evidation, or moving from a recruited panel to a study they run themselves, here's how onboarding typically plays out with WeGuide.

Discovery Call

A 30 minute conversation with one of our research delivery team. We look at your protocol, where your participants will come from, and whether WeGuide is actually the right fit. If what you really need is a ready made U.S. population or an existing dataset, we'll tell you that and point you back toward Evidation.

Study Configuration

Our team works alongside yours to configure the study in the no code Program Builder: eScreening, eConsent, eCOA schedules, engagement content and wearable connections. If you're keeping REDCap or another system, we set up the Integration Engine at this stage. Typical timeline is two to four weeks.

We Guide

Participant Onboarding

The whitelabel app goes live under your brand. Your team invites participants through your own channels, and they download the app, complete eConsent and begin the study. Push notifications, scheduling and education content are ready from day one, and wearable data starts syncing as soon as participants connect a device.

Ongoing Support

You get a named research delivery contact, not a ticketing queue. Protocol amendments, new consent versions and new instruments are handled with the same team that configured the study. We stay involved for the life of the study.

Case studies: research teams running studies with their own participants

BRACE Trial (Murdoch Children's Research Institute)

Murdoch Children's Research Institute ran the BRACE trial, an international randomised trial of the BCG vaccine in healthcare workers during COVID-19, across several countries with thousands of participants. It was a hybrid trial: vaccination and blood collection happened in person, and WeGuide carried the participant journey around those visits. A trial built on the sponsor's own recruited population, not an existing panel, and run across countries rather than inside a single national community.

GenV (Generation Victoria)

Generation Victoria (GenV) is a whole of state longitudinal birth cohort in Victoria, Australia, of roughly 124,000 people: about 50,000 children and 74,000 parents. Long term engagement at that scale depends on an app families will keep on their phones for years, under the study's own brand. WeGuide is the platform behind it.

FSHD Global

FSHD Global runs a longitudinal patient registry for facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy on WeGuide, with patient reported outcomes and wearable integration. A rare disease community whose members belong to the registry, not to a vendor's panel, and whose data builds over years rather than in a single study. Read the case study →

Questions

Straight answers on how WeGuide compares to Evidation, how the two models differ, and when Evidation is the right choice.

Contact us

What is Evidation?

Evidation is a real world data company founded in 2012 and based in California. It runs the Evidation app, where around 5 million people in the U.S. track their health, earn rewards and choose whether to share data with research. Life sciences, consumer health and government customers use Evidation for real world datasets, patient insights, trial recruitment, prospective observational studies and a licensed research and engagement platform.

Is WeGuide a direct replacement for Evidation?

Not for everything. WeGuide doesn't include a ready made community of participants or existing real world datasets, which are Evidation's core strengths. WeGuide replaces the part where you need a platform to run your own study: branded apps, eConsent, validated eCOA, wearables, telehealth and engagement for participants you recruit or already have. If you're choosing between buying access to a population and running a study on your own, the question to ask is where your participants will come from.

Can WeGuide recruit participants for us?

WeGuide is a platform, not a recruitment panel. Research teams invite participants through their own sites, clinics, registries and communications, and onboard them through eScreening and eConsent in the app. Push notifications, scheduling and education content then keep them engaged after enrolment. If recruitment from a large, already engaged U.S. population is the main need, Evidation or a dedicated recruitment partner is the better fit. Many teams do both: recruit through their usual channels, and run the study itself on a platform they control.

Can we run an interventional or hybrid trial on WeGuide?

Yes. WeGuide supports eScreening, eConsent with version control and re-consent, a library of validated eCOA instruments, telehealth, native wearables and provisioned devices, and it's FDA 21 CFR Part 11 compliant. The BRACE trial, an international randomised vaccine trial with in person vaccination and blood collection, ran its participant journey on WeGuide.

Do participants use Evidation's app or our app?

With WeGuide, participants use a native iOS and Android app under your organisation's brand, published under your own App Store account and name, or they use the existing WeGuide app if you prefer. In Evidation's community model, people take part through the Evidation app. Evidation also licenses its platform with a branded program experience, and its privacy policy describes programs that feature partners' branding instead of or in addition to Evidation's, so ask Evidation directly how that branding is delivered and whether the app appears in the stores under your name.

How is WeGuide priced compared with Evidation?

WeGuide pricing is project based and quoted on request, with hosting, support and modules included. Evidation doesn't publish pricing. Its website describes cohort access as one time engagements or ongoing subscriptions, and its platform as available to license or as a fully managed study. Because the two models buy different things (a platform for your cohort versus access to Evidation's), compare them on total study cost rather than line items.
