STarT MSK Screening Tool: Assessing Musculoskeletal Risk
This questionnaire helps clinicians identify patients at risk of ongoing musculoskeletal pain. It guides treatment by grouping people into risk categories to ensure the right care.

STarT MSK Screening Tool
The STarT MSK Screening Tool helps clinicians quickly assess patients with musculoskeletal pain. By grouping individuals based on their risk of ongoing disability, it guides targeted treatment plans. This smart approach ensures patients receive the right level of care early in their recovery.

What is STarT MSK Screening Tool
The STarT MSK Screening Tool is a smart way to check risk levels in patients with musculoskeletal pain, helping clinicians match treatments to needs. Developed by the team at Keele University, this questionnaire expands on the famous back pain version to cover neck, shoulder, knee and multisite pain issues. It looks at physical factors like pain spread and intensity alongside psychological bits like anxiety or coping. Patients answer simple yes or no questions to generate a score that sorts them into low, medium or high risk categories for persistent disability. This stratification lets GPs and physios spot who needs simple advice and who requires complex care. It is quick to finish in a waiting room and stops us from overtreating low risk folks. Using this tool ensures clinical resources go exactly where they are needed most for better long term recovery outcomes.
The STarT MSK Screening Tool can be scored using one main approach: a cumulative risk stratification method. You calculate the total by summing weighted points from 10 items covering pain intensity, spread, and psychosocial factors. The final score ranges from 0 to 12. Scores between 0 and 4 indicate low risk, 5 to 8 suggest medium risk, and 9 to 12 point to high risk. This practical system helps clinicians match patients to the right care pathways, making sure those with complex needs get more support while others manage with less intervention.
