What is Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS)

The Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) is a trusted survey for tracking knee health. It helps clinicians understand patient recovery. This survey expands on the WOMAC scale to cover younger and active patients. It looks at the short and long term impacts of knee trauma quite effectively for better care planning. It assesses five specific areas including pain, symptoms, daily living function, sports activities, and quality of life. Patients answer items using a standard five-point Likert scale ranging from no problems to extreme difficulties experienced. The KOOS is self-administered and takes about ten minutes to finish. It works well for research or clinical settings like monitoring ACL tears. Scores convert to a zero to one hundred scale where higher numbers mean better status, making it easy to track progress over time for any patient.

KOOS Scoring

The KOOS can be scored using a standardised method that calculates five separate subscale scores. You start by assigning a value from 0 to 4 to each item, where 0 means no problems and 4 points to extreme difficulties. Next, calculate the mean for the five subscales: Pain, Symptoms, Activities of Daily Living, Sport and Recreation, and Quality of Life. You then transform these raw numbers into a 0 to 100 scale. On this scale, 100 represents perfect knee health and 0 indicates major issues. Clinicians should keep the five scores separate rather than combining them into a total score.
