Intermittent and Constant Osteoarthritis Pain Measure (ICOAP)

The Intermittent and Constant Osteoarthritis Pain Measure (ICOAP) evaluates hip and knee osteoarthritis by separating constant aching from intermittent pain spikes. It gives clinicians a clearer view of a patient's daily struggle, helping guide better treatment plans and improve pain management outcomes.

What is Intermittent and Constant Osteoarthritis Pain Measure (ICOAP)

The Intermittent and Constant Osteoarthritis Pain Measure (ICOAP) evaluates hip and knee pain. It helps clinicians track distinct pain patterns. This questionnaire looks at two specific pain types. It separates dull, constant aching from the sharp, intermittent pain that often comes and goes with activity. Patients answer eleven simple questions about pain intensity and its impact on mood or sleep. They rate items on a scale with five options ranging from 'not at all' to 'extremely', making scoring straightforward and very reliable for tracking changes over time. As a survey patients complete themselves, it is quick to finish in a waiting room or at home. Doctors use it to see if new treatments are working or if pain is getting worse. It gives a clear picture of the patient's daily struggle, ensuring therapy plans focus on the right issues for better relief.

ICOAP Scoring

The ICOAP can be scored using two main approaches: summing raw totals or converting results to a standardised metric. 1. Raw Summing: You rate items from 0 to 4 across two subscales, Constant Pain and Intermittent Pain. Just add up the points for each section to get a basic total. 2. Standardised Scoring: For a clearer picture, clinicians often convert these raw sums into a 0 to 100 scale. You do this by dividing the patient's total by the highest possible score and multiplying by 100. Higher numbers mean the pain is much worse, helping doctors track changes over time.
