What is Neck Disability Index (NDI)

The Neck Disability Index (NDI) is a standard tool for measuring how neck pain impacts daily life. It helps clinicians track functional status accurately. Modelled on the famous Oswestry Index, this ten-item questionnaire is straightforward to use. It asks patients to rate their current condition based on specific daily activities and pain levels. The sections cover pain intensity plus everyday tasks like personal care, lifting, reading, and driving. Each item is scored from zero to five, allowing for a total score out of fifty that clearly highlights the level of disability experienced. It is quick to complete in a clinical setting and works well for acute or chronic neck pain. Physios and doctors use it to monitor progress over time, making it a reliable way to see if treatments are working effectively. This practical feedback helps guide better care plans for long-term recovery.

NDI Scoring

The Neck Disability Index can be scored using one main approach that converts raw numbers into a percentage. It features 10 items covering daily tasks like lifting or driving. Each question gets rated from 0 to 5, with 5 showing the worst pain. You sum these up for a raw score out of 50. To get a percentage, just double the total figure. For instance, a 16 becomes 32 percent. Higher numbers point to greater disability, categorised from mild to complete. If a patient skips a section, calculate the score based on the answered items only. It is a solid way to track recovery over time.
