What is McMaster Family Assessment Device (FAD)

The McMaster Family Assessment Device (FAD) is a trusted tool for checking how families work together. It helps clinical experts spot relationship issues quickly. Built on the McMaster Model of Family Functioning, this questionnaire looks closely at the structural, transactional, and organisational habits of the family unit. It measures seven specific dimensions like Problem Solving, Communication, Roles, and Affective Responsiveness. Participants rate items on a simple scale of four points, choosing response options ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree. Clinicians use the FAD to screen for unhealthy patterns and plan therapy. It is easy to score and interpret, making it a reliable choice for busy practices and research. The results give a clear picture of family health, helping professionals guide families to better understanding and stronger relationships.

FAD Scoring

The McMaster Family Assessment Device is scored using a straightforward method focusing on seven specific subscales. First, assign values from 1 to 4 for responses like Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree. You will need to reverse score select items so that higher numbers always reflect unhealthy functioning. Then, work out the mean score for each of the seven subscales, such as Communication or Roles, by averaging the item responses. Generally, a score of 2.0 or higher flags potential problems in family dynamics.
