Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR): Staging Dementia
The CDR helps clinicians stage dementia severity through interviews with patients and carers. It evaluates memory and daily function to accurately monitor cognitive changes.

Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR)
The Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR) is a standard method for staging dementia severity. By assessing six domains like memory and orientation, it determines impairment levels. It's essential for tracking cognitive decline, helping doctors plan appropriate care as a patient's condition changes.

What is Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR)
The Clinical Dementia Rating Scale (CDR) is a trusted tool for staging dementia severity. It helps doctors track cognitive decline effectively. This assessment uses a semi-structured interview with the patient and a reliable informant to capture a clear picture of daily mental functioning and track recent changes. Clinicians evaluate six key areas including memory, orientation, judgement, community affairs, home hobbies, and personal care. Scores range from 0 for normal function up to 3 for severe impairment, creating a comprehensive global score. Widely used in clinical trials and practice, it monitors progression over time. The interview takes roughly 40 minutes and requires training to ensure accuracy. By focusing on real-world skills, it helps families plan for future care needs and supports better medical decisions for ageing patients today.
The Clinical Dementia Rating Scale can be scored using two main approaches: the Global CDR Score and the Sum of Boxes or CDR SB. 1. Global CDR Score: This method uses a set algorithm where Memory is the primary driver. It assigns a stage from 0 for healthy to 3 for severe dementia based on six cognitive domains. 2. Sum of Boxes: Ideally suited for tracking small changes, this approach adds up the scores from all six domains to get a total between 0 and 18. It gives a detailed picture of decline and is handy for clinical trials needing precise data.
