Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI): Assessing Sleep
The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index is a self-report tool that assesses sleep quality over the last month. Clinicians use it to identify sleep disturbances in adults and guide treatment plans.

Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)
The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) is a self-rated questionnaire assessing sleep quality over a one-month period. Measuring components like duration and latency, it helps clinicians distinguish between good and poor sleepers. It's an essential tool for identifying sleep disorders in clinical practice.

What is Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI)
The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) is a reliable tool for measuring sleep habits. It helps clinicians track sleep quality over the last month. This self-rated questionnaire uses 19 items to generate seven component scores. It gives a clear picture of a patient's overall sleep health and nightly patterns. It looks at specific areas like sleep duration, sleep disturbances, and sleep latency. Patients rate their own experiences to create a global score, where a total greater than five suggests significant difficulties with getting a good night's rest. Taking only five to ten minutes to finish, the PSQI is incredibly handy for busy clinics and research studies. It is excellent for spotting insomnia or checking if current treatments are working well. This feedback helps healthcare providers make better choices about care plans and supports practical sleep interventions.
The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index can be scored using one main approach: calculating the Global PSQI Score. You'll group the 19 items into seven component scores, covering areas like sleep latency, duration, and disturbances. Each component gets rated from 0 to 3, where 0 means no difficulty and 3 indicates severe problems. To get the Global PSQI Score, simply add these seven numbers together for a total between 0 and 21. A final score greater than 5 suggests poor sleep quality, helping clinicians spot issues early.
