Patient-Specific Functional Scale (PSFS)

The Patient-Specific Functional Scale (PSFS) lets patients identify activities they struggle with due to injury or illness. This self-report measure tracks functional status changes over time, focusing on individual goals. It’s a practical way to monitor recovery in musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

What is Patient-Specific Functional Scale (PSFS)

The Patient-Specific Functional Scale (PSFS) is a practical tool for measuring health status. It helps clinicians track functional changes in patients. Unlike fixed surveys, this questionnaire lets patients choose up to five activities that are difficult due to their condition. It focuses on what matters most to the individual. Once activities are listed, the patient rates their current ability on an 11-point scale. A score of 0 means they cannot do the task at all, while 10 means they can do it at the level before the injury. The final score is the average of these ratings. This valid measure is quick to use in clinical settings like physical therapy. It works well for back pain, neck pain, and knee problems. Because it is so responsive to change, it is great for setting goals and checking if treatment is working over time. It makes patient care more personal.

PSFS Scoring

The Patient Specific Functional Scale can be scored using one main calculation approach. First, ask your patient to list three to five important activities they're struggling with due to their condition. They'll rate each one on a scale from 0 to 10, where 0 means they can't do it at all and 10 means they're back to their pre injury level. To get the final score, just add up the ratings and divide by the number of activities listed. This gives you an average out of 10, so higher numbers show better function. It's a top way to track progress over time.
