What is Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS)

The Lower Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS) is a trusted tool for checking leg function. It helps clinicians track recovery progress in various lower limb issues. This survey uses twenty simple questions about everyday activities. It looks at how well a person can move around and handle daily tasks without struggling too much. Patients rate tasks on a scale from zero to four based on difficulty. A zero means they cannot do it at all while a four means it is easy to perform. The total score goes up to eighty and higher numbers show better function plus less disability. It is really quick to finish so it fits well in busy clinics. Physios use it for hip, knee, or ankle problems to see if treatments are working properly. It is great for setting goals and making sure the rehab plan stays on the right track for the patient's return to full activity and sport.

LEFS Scoring

The Lower Extremity Functional Scale can be scored using one main approach: calculating a simple total sum. You'll look at 20 everyday activities where patients rate their difficulty from 0 for extreme difficulty to 4 for no difficulty. Just add these values up to get a final score between 0 and 80. Higher numbers mean better function, while lower scores point to more limitation. It's a practical way to track recovery, and a change of 9 points typically shows a true clinical improvement worth noting.
