What is International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS)

The International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) is a trusted tool for checking lower urinary tract symptoms. It helps clinicians track prostate health. This screening questionnaire relies on eight specific questions to measure severity. Seven items focus on urinary troubles and one looks at your overall quality of life. Patients rate issues like incomplete emptying, frequency, weak stream, and urgency on a scale from zero to five. The final scores add up to show if symptoms are mild, moderate, or severe, giving a clear picture of how much the condition bothers the patient. It is completed by the patient and takes just a few minutes, making it a solid pick for busy clinics. Doctors use it to guide treatment choices or see if therapies are working well. It is a practical way to keep an eye on BPH progression and ensure men get the right care for their specific needs.

IPSS Scoring

The International Prostate Symptom Score can be scored using two distinct sections to check urinary health. First, the Symptom Score sums answers from seven questions about urinary troubles like incomplete emptying. Each item is rated 0 to 5, creating a total between 0 and 35. Doctors group these totals into mild (0 to 7), moderate (8 to 19), or severe (20 to 35) categories to guide treatment. Second, the Quality of Life score asks how you would feel living with these symptoms forever. It is a single question rated 0 to 6, helping clinicians see how much the condition bothers you.
