Hip Outcome Score (HOS): Measuring Hip Function

The Hip Outcome Score helps active patients rate their hip function during sports and daily life. Doctors use this survey to track progress and plan treatment for hip injuries.

Hip Outcome Score (HOS)

The Hip Outcome Score (HOS) is a patient-reported survey designed to assess physical function in active people with non-arthritic hip pain. It's great for tracking recovery after arthroscopy, covering both daily living and sports activities. This tool helps clinicians understand how well a treatment plan is working.

What is Hip Outcome Score (HOS)

The Hip Outcome Score (HOS) is a reliable tool for checking hip function in active adults. It helps clinicians track recovery after surgery or injury. This survey targets non-arthritic hip problems, such as labral tears or impingement. It divides into two distinct sections to provide a full snapshot of how the joint handles the grind of daily routines. The first part covers Activities of Daily Living (ADL) with seventeen items, while the second tackles Sports with nine specific actions. Patients rate their ability from zero to four, so higher numbers show better function and less trouble with movement. It’s self-administered and takes just ten minutes to complete. Doctors use it often for hip arthroscopy patients to monitor progress. Because it separates basic tasks from high-demand sports, it avoids the "ceiling effect" found in other exams, helping athletes plan their return to the field.

HOS Scoring

The Hip Outcome Score can be scored using two main approaches covering distinct functional areas: the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Sports subscales. 1. Calculation: Patients rate items from 0 to 4, with 4 meaning no difficulty. You sum the points, divide by the maximum possible score, and multiply by 100. If someone marks N/A, simply remove that item from the total potential points so the maths stays accurate. 2. Interpretation: Scores range from 0 to 100 percent, where higher numbers show better function. It is a reliable way to track recovery after hip arthroscopy or labral tear treatments.
