Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) Assessment
This patient survey assesses symptoms and function in those with foot and ankle injuries. It helps doctors track recovery by measuring pain levels, daily activities, and quality of life.

Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS)

What is Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS)
The Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) is a trusted survey for tracking ankle health. It helps clinicians measure recovery from various leg injuries. This 42-item questionnaire adapts the well-known KOOS survey to focus on the lower leg. It gives patients a voice by letting them rate their own foot problems directly. The tool covers five main areas including pain levels, other symptoms, and daily living activities. It also looks at sports function and quality of life. Patients answer using a simple zero to four scale, so it is easy to spot where they struggle the most. Scores convert to a zero to 100 range where higher numbers mean better results. This makes it handy for tracking progress with issues like ankle instability or plantar fasciitis. Since it takes just ten minutes to finish, it fits easily into busy clinic schedules and helps guide future treatment.
The Foot and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) can be scored using one main approach across five distinct subscales. First, patients rate 42 items from 0 to 4 on a standard Likert scale. You calculate a raw sum for each section, covering areas like pain and daily living. Next, transform these raw numbers into a 0 to 100 scale using a set formula. Here, 100 represents perfect foot health and 0 means extreme problems. It is important to remember that you never calculate a total aggregate score. Instead, interpret the five subscale scores individually to get a clear picture of patient recovery.
