This specific measure tracks the maximum distance a person can reach forward while standing in a fixed position without stepping. It focuses on testing the limits of stability. Clinicians record the difference between the starting arm position and maximal reach using a yardstick attached to a wall at shoulder height. Scores below 15 centimetres often suggest a higher chance of falling, while reaches over 25 centimetres indicate healthy balance control. It is simple to administer in clinics or homes since it requires minimal equipment and takes only a few minutes to complete. Therapists use it to track progress in rehabilitation or screen for balance deficits. The FRT offers a practical way to monitor stability changes and helps guide ongoing safety planning.
The Functional Reach Test is scored using a single direct measurement approach that tracks forward reach distance. To start, place a ruler on the wall at shoulder height. Note the starting position of the third knuckle with the arm raised. They reach forward as far as possible without moving their feet, and you record the end point. The score is the difference between these numbers, usually averaged over three trials. Results below 15 cm suggest high fall risk, while reaching past 25 cm indicates better stability.
