Emory Functional Ambulation Profile (EFAP)

The Emory Functional Ambulation Profile (EFAP) measures walking ability in stroke patients by timing specific tasks. It tests mobility on surfaces like carpet and stairs to simulate real-world conditions. It's a reliable tool that helps clinicians track progress and plan effective rehabilitation for independent living.

What is Emory Functional Ambulation Profile (EFAP)

The Emory Functional Ambulation Profile (EFAP) measures walking ability during stroke recovery. It helps clinicians track functional progress in rehab. This assessment features five timed tasks that simulate everyday environments. It looks at how patients handle different floor surfaces and common physical obstacles. Participants walk on hard floors and carpet, get up from a chair, step over obstacles, and climb stairs. Scoring relies on the time taken to finish each task, giving a clear picture of gait speed and mobility under changing physical conditions. Clinicians find the EFAP easy to administer in clinics or hospitals without needing expensive equipment. It is great for monitoring changes over time, helping therapists adjust treatment plans effectively. This makes it a really smart option for ensuring patients regain their independence safely.

EFAP Scoring

The Emory Functional Ambulation Profile is scored using a straightforward timed approach. You time the patient as they complete five specific walking tasks, including walking on hard floors, carpet, and stairs. Record the time in seconds for each activity. If a patient needs help, the level of assistance is noted, but the main focus remains on speed. Finally, add up the times for all five tasks to get a total score. A lower total time suggests the patient has better walking ability and functional mobility for real world situations.
