What is Foot and Ankle Disability Index (FADI)

The Foot and Ankle Disability Index (FADI) is a smart tool for checking lower limb health. It helps clinicians track recovery in various ankle issues. This 34-item survey looks at how foot pain impacts daily life and routine. It covers everything from standing and walking to sleeping, giving a clear picture of physical limits. Patients rate activities on a simple 5-point scale, ranging from "no difficulty" to "unable to do." It splits into general daily tasks and a specific sport module for higher-level actions like running, cutting, or landing from a jump. Clinicians use it often for chronic ankle instability or sprains. It’s quick to finish in roughly ten minutes, making it easy to use in busy clinics. The scores help physios plan treatments and spot progress over time, ensuring patients get back on their feet safely and effectively for the long term.

FADI Scoring

The Foot and Ankle Disability Index can be scored using a straightforward percentage based approach. It looks at 26 daily activity items and 8 sport specific questions. Each item gets rated from 0, meaning unable to do, to 4, meaning no difficulty. To calculate the score, simply add up the points for all answered questions. You then divide this total by the maximum possible score, usually 104 for the main part and 32 for the sport section, and multiply by 100. A higher percentage points to better function, so scoring 100 means you are moving freely without pain.
