What is EuroQol 5-Dimension (EQ-5D)

The EuroQol 5-Dimension, or EQ-5D, is a standard tool for measuring generic health status. It helps researchers track health related quality of life. This instrument keeps things simple by using two distinct parts. It combines a descriptive system with a visual analogue scale to capture a complete picture of patient health. Patients rate their state across five key areas including mobility, self care, usual activities, pain or discomfort, and anxiety or depression. Depending on the version, they pick from three or five levels of severity to show exactly how they feel. It is notably quick to finish and easy to score, making it a top pick for clinical trials and economic studies. The results convert into a single utility index value, handy for calculating quality adjusted life years. This data helps healthcare providers make better decisions for patient care.

EQ-5D Scoring

The EuroQol 5-Dimension (EQ-5D) can be scored using two main approaches: the descriptive system and the visual scale. 1. The descriptive system looks at five areas including mobility and pain. We turn these answers into a single index value using local weights, where one equals full health and zero means death. Scores can drop below zero for states worse than death. 2. The EQ VAS asks patients to rate their health on a thermometer from 0 to 100. It gives a quick snapshot of how they are travelling right now. This combo helps clinicians track health changes easily.
