What is Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI)

The Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) is a practical tool for measuring fatigue severity. It helps clinicians rapidly spot how tiredness impacts daily functioning. Developed originally for cancer care, this questionnaire has nine items and works well for various clinical conditions. It focuses on rapid assessment of severe exhaustion. Patients rate fatigue on a zero to ten scale. Three items track weariness right now, usually, and at its worst during the last 24 hours. The rest check how lethargy interferes with general activity, mood, walking, work, relations, and enjoyment of life. Taking less than five minutes to finish, the BFI is a perfect choice for busy clinics. It allows doctors to screen for severe fatigue quickly without burdening the patient. This makes it easier to track changes over time and adjust treatment plans so people can manage their energy levels more effectively.

BFI Scoring

The Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI) is typically scored using one straightforward approach to measure tiredness. You'll look at nine items rated from 0 to 10, where 0 means no fatigue and 10 is the worst imaginable. To get the global score, simply add up the responses and divide by the number of answered questions. This gives you an average between 0 and 10. Clinicians often group these scores to check severity, with 1 to 3 being mild, 4 to 6 moderate, and 7 or higher indicating severe fatigue. It's a quick way to track how much tiredness messes with daily life.
