This behavioural assessment tool looks at six specific indicators to measure distress. It is built to evaluate both preterm and term babies during routine procedures. Observers score facial expression, cry, breathing patterns, arm movements, leg movements, and arousal state. Each item receives a zero or one, except for crying which can score a two, resulting in a total score ranging between zero and seven. Healthcare teams use NIPS because it is fast and easy to apply at the bedside. A total score greater than three suggests the baby needs pain management interventions. It works well for monitoring responses before, during, and after medical tasks, ensuring little ones get the right care when they hurt.
The Neonatal Infant Pain Scale can be scored using a single cumulative method based on six behavioural indicators. Clinicians assess facial expression, breathing patterns, arms, legs, and state of arousal, assigning 0 or 1 point for each. The cry category is weighted differently, ranging from 0 to 2 points. You simply sum these values to get a total score between 0 and 7. A result greater than 3 suggests the baby is in pain and likely needs comfort or medication.
