The Neonatal Pain and Discomfort Scale (EDIN)

The EDIN scale helps clinicians assess prolonged pain and discomfort in newborn babies. Staff observe sleep and facial expressions to better manage distress in hospitalised infants.

Neonatal Pain and Discomfort Scale (EDIN)

Designed for prolonged pain assessment in preterm infants, the Neonatal Pain and Discomfort Scale (EDIN) evaluates five behavioural cues. By observing sleep, facial expression, and consolability, this tool helps clinicians identify distress. It's essential for managing comfort in vulnerable newborns.

What is Neonatal Pain and Discomfort Scale (EDIN)

The Neonatal Pain and Discomfort Scale (EDIN) is a trusted tool for assessing prolonged pain in newborns. It helps clinical staff spot distress in preterm babies. Unlike tools for sudden pain, EDIN evaluates suffering that lasts a while. It relies on five simple indicators to measure exactly how a baby feels over several hours. Nurses observe facial activity and body movements alongside sleep quality. They also check how the infant connects with caregivers and their general consolability. Each item gets scored from zero to three, where higher numbers suggest much more discomfort. Since it requires watching the infant for a few hours, it fits well into daily NICU routines. This approach ensures that quiet or exhausted babies do not get overlooked. It gives the care team a clear picture so they can manage pain better and help these little ones settle down comfortably.

EDIN Scoring

The Neonatal Pain and Discomfort Scale (EDIN) can be scored using one main approach: a cumulative sum calculation. Clinicians observe five specific behaviours over several hours, covering facial activity, body movements, sleep quality, contact with nurses, and consolability. Each item gets rated from 0 for no signs to 3 for severe signs. You simply add these up for a total ranging from 0 to 15. Generally, a score of 5 or higher suggests the bub is experiencing prolonged pain and needs pain management interventions.
