The form asks patients to rate pain severity on a simple zero to ten numeric scale. It looks at worst, least, average, and current pain levels. Plus, it checks how pain affects general activity, mood, walking ability, work, relations, and sleep. Clinicians love the BPI because it is quick to finish, usually taking under five minutes. The Brief Pain Inventory is scored using two main approaches: Pain Severity and Pain Interference. 1. Pain Severity Score: You calculate this by averaging four items rated 0 to 10.
