What is Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS)

The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) is a trusted tool for assessing social phobia severity. It helps clinicians understand patient struggles. With 24 distinct items, the assessment looks closely at different social situations. It separates these scenarios into performance tasks and general social interactions. For every item, patients rate their fear and avoidance on a scale from zero to three. This dual rating system gives a clear picture of how much anxiety affects their daily life and exactly what situations they might actively try to stay away from. While it began as a test administered by a clinician, versions completed by the patient are handy. It is great for tracking progress during therapy. Doctors use the total score to decide on treatment plans and check if medication or counselling is truly working well for the patient's recovery.

LSAS Scoring

The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale is scored using a summation method that tracks social phobia symptoms. 1. Total Score: Clinicians add up ratings for fear and avoidance across 24 situations. Each item gets rated from 0 to 3 for fear and 0 to 3 for avoidance. The total ranges from 0 to 144, where scores over 60 suggest marked social anxiety. 2. Subscales: You can also split scores into performance anxiety and social interaction categories to pinpoint specific triggers. It is a handy way to spot exactly where a patient struggles most.
