Taking roughly 20 minutes to complete, the BPRS is great for busy clinical settings. It is widely used to monitor treatment response over time. The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale can be scored using two main approaches: total symptom summation and subscale analysis. 1. Total Score: Clinicians rate 18 symptom items on a scale from 1 for not present to 7 for extremely severe based on observation and a clinical interview. You simply add these up to get a total between 18 and 126, where higher numbers mean more severe pathology. 2.
