What is Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index (WOSI)

The Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index (WOSI) is a specific tool for checking quality of life in patients with shoulder instability issues. It features 21 items that really dig into how shoulder problems impact daily living. This questionnaire focuses heavily on subjective patient experiences regarding their joint. Questions cover four main areas including physical symptoms plus sports and recreation. It also looks at lifestyle and emotions. Patients mark their answers on visual analogue scales from zero to one hundred to clearly show severity. Clinicians find it easy to use because patients can finish it quickly in the waiting room or clinic. It is highly reliable for tracking recovery after surgery or physical rehab. The final score helps doctors understand the true burden of the injury so they can plan better treatments for lasting shoulder health.

WOSI Scoring

The WOSI can be scored using two main approaches: raw summation and percentage conversion. 1. Raw Score: Patients mark 21 items on 100 mm lines. You measure these marks and sum them up for a total between 0 and 2100. In this format, 0 is the best possible score, while 2100 indicates extreme instability. 2. Percentage Score: To make the results easier to understand, clinicians often convert the raw total to a percentage. This usually involves subtracting the raw score from 2100 and dividing by 21, so 100 percent reflects perfect shoulder health.
