Timed Up and Go Test (TUG)

The Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) is a quick way to assess mobility and balance. It measures the time needed to stand, walk three metres, and sit back down. This simple exam helps clinicians identify fall risks in older adults, providing a clear picture of functional movement without needing special gear.

What is Timed Up and Go Test (TUG)

The Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) is a widely used method to check mobility and balance. It helps clinicians spot fall risks in older adults quickly. This assessment measures functional mobility by tracking how long it takes a person to stand up from a chair, walk three metres at a comfortable pace, turn, and sit back down. Scoring is straightforward since it relies on time measured in seconds. A result under ten seconds usually suggests normal mobility, while times over twelve seconds might point to a higher chance of falling or specific balance issues that really need attention. It requires minimal equipment, just a standard armchair and a stopwatch, making it incredibly easy to use in busy clinics or home visits. Physiotherapists and doctors use it to track changes over time or decide if a patient needs walking aids. It’s a practical tool for keeping older adults safe and independent.

TUG Scoring

The Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) is scored using a single straightforward approach based on time measurement. You simply grab a stopwatch and record the time in seconds it takes for a patient to stand up, walk three metres, turn, and sit back down. Timing starts on the command 'go' and stops when their bottom hits the seat. Generally, a result under 10 seconds suggests normal mobility, while taking longer than 12 to 14 seconds often flags a higher risk of falling. It is a quick way to spot balance issues in older adults without needing fancy gear.
