What is Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK)

The Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK) is a trusted instrument for assessing fear of movement and reinjury in patients managing chronic pain. It helps clinicians clearly understand how fear impacts physical activity levels. This questionnaire looks at the belief that moving might cause more pain or physical damage. Featuring 17 items, patients rate their agreement on a four-point scale ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. It covers two main areas: somatic focus, involving beliefs about serious underlying medical issues, and activity avoidance due to fear. Clinicians find it easy to score, making it practical for busy clinics. High scores often point to a need for graded exposure therapy. It is reliable for tracking progress over time, helping you adjust rehab plans so patients can get back to moving safely and confidently in their daily lives.

TSK Scoring

The Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia can be scored using one main approach based on item summation. This tool involves 17 items rated on a 4 point Likert scale, where 1 means strongly disagree and 4 is strongly agree. Before tallying the final number, you've got to reverse score items 4, 8, 12, and 16 to ensure consistency. After adjusting those, simply add up all responses to get a total between 17 and 68. Higher scores point to greater fear of reinjury, and a cutoff score greater than 37 is often used to identify patients with high levels of kinesiophobia who might need extra support.
