Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB): Physical Function
The SPPB assesses lower limb function in older adults using balance, walking, and chair stand tests. Clinicians use this tool to identify mobility issues and predict future disability risks.

Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB)
The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) assesses lower extremity function in older adults. Combining balance, gait speed, and chair stand tests, it helps clinicians predict disability risks and monitor mobility. It's a standard method for evaluating physical performance in ageing populations.

What is Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB)
The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) is a standard tool for checking lower limb function in older adults. It helps spot mobility risks early. This assessment looks at three main areas of physical health. It combines balance tests with gait speed checks and chair stand exercises to measure functional strength. Clinicians score each section from zero to four based on performance. The total score ranges from zero to twelve, where higher numbers mean better function. It covers static balance, walking speed over four metres, and leg strength during chair rise tasks. It is quick to administer in clinical or home settings without needing fancy gear. Doctors and physios use it to predict disability risks or fall hazards. It is a practical way to track changes over time, making it easier to plan rehab or support for ageing patients who want to stay active.
The Short Physical Performance Battery can be scored using one main approach based on three physical tests. You will assess standing balance, walking speed, and chair stands. Each section gets a score from 0 to 4 based on performance time or ability. A 0 means the patient could not do the task, while a 4 indicates top performance. Add these up for a total score between 0 and 12. Higher numbers show better lower body function, while scores below 10 suggest a risk of mobility issues. It is a handy way to track physical changes over time.
