Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) Scale

The PASI helps doctors measure psoriasis severity by checking redness, thickness, and scaling. It tracks skin changes over time to show how well treatments are working for patients.

Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI)

The Psoriasis Area and Severity Index, or PASI, is the standard for assessing psoriasis severity. It evaluates redness, thickness, and scaling across four body regions to calculate a score. This helps doctors track treatment progress, making it essential in clinical trials for monitoring patient outcomes.

What is Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI)

The Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) is the main tool for measuring psoriasis severity. It helps doctors track how well treatments work. This assessment breaks the body into four distinct sections: the head, upper limbs, trunk, and lower limbs. Each area gets a score based on the total surface area involved. Clinicians look closely at three visual signs of plaque severity: redness, thickness, and scaling. They rate these symptoms on a scale from zero to four, while also estimating the precise percentage of skin covered by lesions in each specific region. Calculating the final score involves weighting these numbers to get a total between 0 and 72. It is used often in clinical trials to see if new medicines are doing the job. Although it takes a bit of practice to get right, the PASI remains the best way to check if a patient is getting better.

PASI Scoring

The Psoriasis Area and Severity Index can be scored using a single composite method that weighs body regions. Clinicians divide the body into four sections: head, arms, trunk, and legs. For each spot, you rate redness, thickness, and scaling on a scale from 0 to 4, then estimate the affected area on a 0 to 6 scale. These numbers get multiplied by specific weightings for each body part because legs count more than the head. Finally, you add everything up to get a total between 0 and 72. A score over 10 usually means severe psoriasis needing systemic therapy.
