What is Functional Rating Index (FRI)

The Functional Rating Index (FRI) is a reliable tool for checking spinal pain and function. It helps clinicians track patient progress easily and accurately. This smart patient reported questionnaire blends the best parts of the Oswestry Disability Index and the Neck Disability Index into one single, practical assessment form. It features ten specific items covering daily activities like sleeping, lifting, and driving. Patients rate their ability on a scale from zero to four, where zero means no pain and four indicates severe trouble performing these specific tasks. Clinicians love the FRI because it is quick to complete and score. It works well for both neck and back problems, making it a handy choice for busy practices. By tracking changes over time, it helps show if treatments are actually working and guides future care plans effectively, ensuring patients get the right support.

FRI Scoring

The Functional Rating Index can be scored using one main approach: calculating a total percentage score. This tool lists 10 items covering pain and daily function. Patients rate each from 0, meaning no pain or full ability, to 4, indicating worst pain or inability. You simply add these up to get a raw total out of 40. To make it easier to track progress, divide that number by 40 and multiply by 100. This gives a percentage where 0% means full function and 100% indicates severe disability. It is a handy way to spot changes in back or neck issues over time.
