Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB)

The Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) is a short bedside screening tool designed to evaluate frontal lobe dysfunction. It assesses executive functions, including conceptualisation and mental flexibility. This test helps clinicians identify neurodegenerative conditions, providing a practical method to rapidly check a patient's cognitive health.

What is Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB)

The Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB) is a short bedside tool used to check frontal lobe function. It helps doctors spot executive dysfunction quickly. This screening test consists of six subtests that look at different cognitive skills. It focuses on how the brain plans, controls complex movements, and manages thoughts. Patients work through tasks like finding similarities between words and listing words starting with a specific letter. It also checks if they can stop an action when needed or if they struggle with conflicting instructions during the standard assessment. Clinicians can give this test in about ten minutes right at the bedside. It is really handy for telling the difference between Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia. The scoring is simple, making it a practical choice for busy clinics needing fast results for better patient care planning.

FAB Scoring

The Frontal Assessment Battery is scored using a straightforward summation of six specific subtests. 1. Subtest Scoring: You will assess six distinct areas including conceptualisation, mental flexibility, and motor programming. Each of the six items gets a rating from 0 to 3, where 3 represents the best response and 0 shows no response or significant errors. 2. Total Score: Simply add these up for a maximum score of 18. Higher numbers mean better frontal lobe health. A total under 12 often points to frontal dysfunction, helping doctors spot issues like frontotemporal dementia quickly right at the bedside.
