Motricity Index (MI): Assessing Limb Strength

Clinicians use the Motricity Index to assess arm and leg strength after a stroke. This simple test helps medical teams track muscle recovery and monitor changes in movement abilities.

Motricity Index (MI)

The Motricity Index (MI) provides a rapid method for assessing limb strength in stroke patients. By evaluating specific arm and leg movements, this clinical tool generates a weighted score to monitor motor impairment. It's a key resource for tracking recovery and guiding rehab.

What is Motricity Index (MI)

The Motricity Index (MI) offers a quick way to check limb strength following a stroke. It helps therapists track motor recovery progress with ease. This tool looks at arm and leg movement separately. It focuses on three specific actions for the upper limb plus three for the lower limb to spot any weakness. Clinicians score items like pinch grip or knee extension using a weighted system. Scores range from zero for no movement to 33 for full power. These points get added up and converted to a simple zero to 100 scale, where 100 indicates normal strength levels. It is super fast to use and takes only about five minutes. This makes it great for busy hospitals. Therapists use it to predict if a patient will walk again or regain hand function. It is a reliable choice for checking how well rehab is working and setting clear goals for the patient's recovery journey.

MI Scoring

The Motricity Index can be scored using a weighted system to measure motor loss in limbs. Clinicians test three specific movements on the affected arm and leg, like pinch grip or knee extension. You grade muscle strength on a weighted scale ranging from 0 for no movement to 33 for normal power. To get the final result, simply add the points for the three actions on each side and add one to the total. This gives a score out of 100 for the arm and leg separately. It is a handy way to track stroke recovery without needing fancy gear.
