What is Motor Assessment Scale (MAS)

The Motor Assessment Scale (MAS) is a practical tool used by therapists to evaluate everyday motor function in stroke survivors. It helps track recovery. This scale looks at eight specific areas of motor behaviour plus muscle tone. It focuses on functional tasks rather than isolated movements to see how patients handle real life. Clinicians score items on a zero to six scale based on performance. Key areas include rolling over, sitting up, standing, walking, and fine hand movements. The hierarchical scoring means higher numbers show better control and coordination during these activities. It is quick to administer in about 15 minutes and requires minimal equipment like a stopwatch and small objects. Physiotherapists use it to set goals and monitor progress over time. Since it measures relevant tasks, the results directly help shape rehabilitation plans for better independence.

MAS Scoring

The Motor Assessment Scale can be scored using a hierarchical rating system across eight specific motor tasks. Clinicians check eight areas of motor function plus general muscle tone. For the motor items, you rate the patient from 0 to 6 based on their best performance. Since tasks are ranked by difficulty, a patient must master lower level tasks to score higher. While you can add these up for a total out of 48, it is often better to look at individual item scores to target specific rehab needs. Keep in mind the general tone item is usually scored separately and not added to the total.
