Measuring Hip Function
Discover how you can implement the EQ-5D, a versatile health-related quality of life instrument used worldwide for assessing patient outcomes across various diseases and settings within WeGuide.
OHS Oxford Hip Score
The EQ-5D is a widely recognized tool for measuring health-related quality of life (HRQoL). It’s been a game changer in the world of patient-reported outcomes, offering a standardized way to assess health across different populations and conditions. Let’s dive into what makes the EQ-5D tick and why it’s become such a go to instrument for researchers and healthcare professionals alike.
What is
OHS Oxford Hip Score
The EQ-5D is a standardized, self-reported instrument for measuring health-related quality of life, developed by the EuroQol Group. It consists of two components: a Descriptive System and a Visual Analog Scale (VAS). The Descriptive System evaluates five dimensions—mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression—each with three levels (EQ-5D-3L) or five levels (cc) of severity. Respondents select the option that best describes their current health, forming a five-digit health profile. The VAS records overall health on a scale from 0 (worst) to 100 (best). EQ-5D is widely used in clinical trials, population studies, and economic evaluations to assess health outcomes.

EQ-5D Scoring
The EQ-5D can be scored using two main approaches: the Utility Index Score and the Level Sum Score (LSS).
1. Unitity Index Score
Applies country-specific value sets to five dimensions (mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression). Scores range from 0 (death) to 1 (perfect health), with possible negative values for states worse than death. Value sets use methods like Time Trade-Off (TTO) or Visual Analog Scale (VAS).
2. Unitity Index Score
Utilizes national value sets for five dimensions: mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/discomfort, and anxiety/depression. Scores span from 0 (death) to 1 (perfect health), with potential negative values for states worse than death. Methods like Time Trade-Off (TTO) or Visual Analog Scale (VAS) are used.
Advantages
Quick to administer, reducing patient burden.
Translated into numerous languages.
Allow for comparisons between different groups.
Work across different diseases and populations.
