What is Caregiver Reaction Assessment

The Caregiver Reaction Assessment (CRA) is a trusted tool for evaluating the specific burdens and positive experiences of caring for family members. Unlike older tools that only look at stress, this twenty-four item survey captures a balanced view. It helps clinicians understand the full picture of a carer's daily life. It covers five key areas, including the impact on health, finances, and daily schedules. It also measures family support and the carer's self-esteem. Participants rate statements on a five-point scale, ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. This multidimensional approach makes it easier to spot exactly where a person needs help. It is commonly used in nursing research and clinical practice for chronic illnesses like cancer or dementia. By identifying specific strain points, healthcare teams can plan better support services for families.

CRA Scoring

The Caregiver Reaction Assessment is scored using a domain based approach rather than a single total sum. It covers 24 items across five subscales: Self Esteem, Lack of Family Support, Impact on Finances, Impact on Schedule, and Impact on Health. You rate items on a 5 point Likert scale ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. To get the final numbers, calculate the average for each dimension separately. High scores on Self Esteem show positive outcomes, while high scores on the other four scales indicate greater caregiver burden. This helps spot specific stress points.
