Berg Balance Scale: Assessing Functional Balance
The Berg Balance Scale measures balance to determine fall risk in older adults. Therapists use this 14-item performance test to guide rehabilitation and track patient progress.

What is Berg Balance Scale
The Berg Balance Scale (BBS) is a trusted tool for checking static and dynamic balance. It’s essential for assessing fall risk in older adults. This 14-item test looks at how well patients handle everyday movements. It covers tasks like sitting to standing, standing unsupported, and reaching forward without moving feet. Clinicians score each task on a five-point scale from 0 to 4. A 0 means the patient can't do the task, while 4 shows full independence. With a top score of 56, it gives a clear picture of functional balance and helps predict if someone might take a tumble. Taking about 15 to 20 minutes, the BBS is easy to run in clinics or homes since it needs very little equipment. It’s a favourite in physiotherapy for tracking progress over time. By spotting balance issues early, healthcare pros can create better care plans to keep patients safe and mobile.
The Berg Balance Scale can be scored using one main cumulative approach. Clinicians observe performance on 14 distinct tasks, such as standing unsupported or retrieving an object from the floor. You rate each item on a five point scale from 0, meaning unable to perform, to 4, indicating full independence. These item scores are added together to get a total out of 56. Generally, a result below 45 suggests a higher risk of falls, while scores near 56 show good balance. This total helps physios decide if a patient needs walking assistance or is safe to move alone.
