Awareness Questionnaire

The Awareness Questionnaire measures impaired self-awareness after a traumatic brain injury. By comparing a patient's self-ratings with family or clinician views, it highlights deficits the patient may deny. This helps teams create effective rehab plans and better understand a patient's functional limitations.

What is Awareness Questionnaire

The Awareness Questionnaire (AQ) is a trusted tool for checking how well patients understand their own abilities following a traumatic brain injury. It uses seventeen items to compare a patient's view of their skills against ratings from a clinician or family member. This comparison helps spot gaps in self-perception. The questions cover physical, cognitive, and behavioural changes. Respondents rate current functioning compared to pre-injury levels on a five-point scale, ranging from much worse to much better. This highlights specific areas where insight is lacking. Clinicians use this tool in rehab settings to guide treatment plans. By finding where a patient overestimates their abilities, teams can set safer goals. It is quick to administer and offers clear data on how a brain injury affects daily life, making it easier to track recovery progress over time.

AQ Scoring

The Awareness Questionnaire can be scored using comparative analysis across three forms: 1. Total Scores: Patients, families, and clinicians rate 17 items on a five point scale comparing current skills to pre injury levels. Summing these gives a total between 17 and 85. 2. Discrepancy Scores: This is the real meat of the assessment. You subtract the family or clinician total from the patient's score. A positive result shows the patient overestimates their abilities, while a negative score suggests they are underestimating things. It is a handy way to track insight during rehab.
