How do you get tested for sleep apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is diagnosed with a sleep study known as polysomnography. This can be done at home using a small portable device that tracks your breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate and sleeping position through the night. For most people, current medical guidelines suggest starting with a home test first. It’s considered just as accurate as a hospital study for moderate to severe cases and is far more convenient for day to day life.

Can you test for sleep apnoea at home?

Yes. At home sleep apnoea tests use the same clinical grade equipment you’d find in a hospital, worn for one night in your own bed. The device records the key information needed for diagnosis, then you send it back. Our sleep specialists review the data and prepare a detailed report. It’s covered by Medicare and, for most people, provides the same diagnostic information as a sleep study done in a clinic.

How much does a sleep apnoea test cost in Australia?

With Medicare, most people don’t have to pay anything. The at-home sleep study (MBS item 12203) and the specialist consultation (MBS item 116) are both bulk billed for those who qualify. If you have private health cover, any gap fees are usually between $150 and $300. We always provide clear pricing before you book so there are no surprises.

How long does it take to get sleep apnoea test results?

Results usually take 7 to 10 business days after you return the device. Our sleep physicians go through the data, hold a video consultation with you, and send a full report with treatment recommendations. That’s much quicker than waiting 6 to 12 months for a public hospital sleep study.

Do I need a referral for a sleep apnea test?

Yes. In Australia, you need a GP referral for a sleep study. This makes sure the test is medically appropriate and that the results go back to your doctor for ongoing care. Our referral process is quick and easy online, no faxing needed.

What is a sleep apnoea test called?

The medical term is polysomnography, often called a sleep study. At home, the test uses a Type 3 portable monitor that tracks your breathing effort, airflow, oxygen levels, heart rate, snoring, and sleeping position. It’s also known as home sleep apnoea testing (HSAT) or cardiorespiratory polygraphy.

How accurate are at-home sleep tests?

For moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea, at-home Type 3 devices are about 96% accurate compared with a sleep study done in a clinic. Both the Australasian Sleep Association and international guidelines recommend home testing as the first option for most people. If the results aren’t clear or you have other health issues, an in-clinic study can be arranged.

What happens if the home sleep test doesn’t give clear results?

Sometimes people don’t sleep enough, or the data isn’t clear enough to make a diagnosis. In that case, we either send the device for a second night at no extra cost or refer you for a full in-lab sleep study at a partner clinic. Either way, you’ll get a clear result.

What happens after a sleep apnoea diagnosis?

Our sleep physicians prepare a full report with clear treatment advice. For moderate to severe cases, this includes guidance on positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy and referrals to specialist respiratory clinics. We make sure you have everything needed to start the right treatment without delay.

Do you cover regional and remote areas?

We cover all states and territories across Australia. The equipment can be shipped anywhere Australia Post delivers. For regional areas, kits usually arrive within three to five business days. The process is the same everywhere, with video consultations so patients don’t need to travel.

Can people outside Australia access your sleep testing service?

Currently, our service is only available across Australia. That said, we’re open to exploring options for other countries in the future and welcome enquiries from international clinics or partners interested in bringing our service overseas.
